With a length of 274 cm (almost 9 ft.), a weight of almost 500 kg (1,100 lb.) and a huge sound to match its dimensions, the Steinway D-274 continues to play a significant role in the global music industry. An estimated 90% of all concert grands on the world’s stages are Steinway D-274 models. Our very own D-274 is a “Hamburg Model” and was handpicked from eight Steinway D models by Stefan Mendl, founding member and pianist of the Vienna Piano Trio. In a city rich with glorious instruments, it is ranked among the best sounding grand pianos in Vienna, and has been endorsed by all artists who have had the opportunity to play it. The instrument enjoys a permanent, climate-controlled residency at Vienna Synchron Stage, which is characterized by its particularly warm, intense, and natural ambience.
Sampling Precision
To capture the Steinway D with all its nuances, our engineers developed a highly precise motion-control system based on a solenoid that operates a noise-free “robot finger.” The micro-controller moves this finger with superhuman precision, enabling flexible curvatures for both key down-strokes and release movements. The MIDI-controlled system delivers over 100 velocities and various release samples, depending on the preceding note length and release speed.
With over 4,000 samples per key and nearly 20,000 samples per microphone position, this representation of the Concert D offers breathtaking authenticity. To record this marvelous instrument in one of the world’s finest acoustic environments, our engineers utilized multiple high-end microphone arrays, providing a wealth of options for crafting your individual sound—with 11 microphone positions to choose from. Even if you're not using a surround setup, the Full Library allows for greater ambience variation and spatial depth by blending the room microphone signals into your stereo mix.

In addition to the vast array of options for mixing various microphone signals, the Synchron Concert D comes with our free Vienna Synchron Pianos Software, offering multiple tools for shaping your sound and enhancing your playing experience. Featuring a high-performance playback engine, the software provides a musician-friendly user interface for quick and easy timbral control. You can intuitively create your sound by filtering specific key ranges or even individual keys, adjusting the instrument’s body resonance, or adding a touch of algorithmic reverb to refine the overall sound.
