Ushering in the next generation of highly-detailed string legatos, Spitfire Appassionata Strings has been recorded using our new "Impulse Legato" technique – the culmination of years of intensive research and development at Spitfire Audio HQ. Delivering flowing and emotive lines, these new legatos offer perfectly balanced vibrato, enabling composers to intuitively write in a beautiful, soaring melodic style in stunning detail.
Referencing the aesthetic of classic melodies from the scores of composers like John Williams and Thomas Newman, this medium-sized string band (8,6,6,6,4) delivers a highly sought-after style of performance, with stunningly-realistic rebowing. Crafted from years of sampling experience, Spitfire Appassionata Strings is your ultimate companion for writing with intention, emotion and – most of all – passion.
Soaring and beautiful legatos
Spitfire Appassionata Strings is made to create melody lines that deliver unrivalled passion, emotion and intensity. These beautiful long and flowing notes – performed by some of London’s finest musicians at Lyndhurst Hall in AIR Studios – beautifully complement AIR libraries such as Spitfire Symphony Orchestra and Spitfire Chamber Strings, as well as other libraries. Inspiration will come in moments, as these legatos require minimal tweaking and offer instant gratification right from the keys.
Delve in deeper with a wide variety of legato types available in great detail. The main “combi” patch features a combination of slurred, bowed and intense Sul I intervals (Sul I only available in V1, V2 and Celli) with repetition based alt-attacks. These techniques offer five dynamic layers delivering incredibly smooth and expressive performances, four round robin attacks, vibrato, and velocity-controlled switching between legato types. This library is both easy to use and highly playable. Simply put, Appassionata lets the composer focus on the pure joy of creating beautifully passionate and realistic melodies.

No Time To Die, The Green Knight, Loki, Cruella, The Underground Railroad, Zack Synder’s Justice League, Small Axe: Mangrove, The Crown, Wonder Woman 1984, The Trial of The Chicago 7, James Bond, Interstellar, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Dark Knight, Harry Potter, Gladiator — all of these were recorded in Lyndhurst Hall at London’s AIR Studios, Spitfire Audio’s spiritual home and a room where blockbuster scores are born.
Architecturally unique, the acoustic properties of Lyndhurst Hall’s interior are renowned globally, loved by composers and musicians alike. There is a gentle reverberation in the room that adds a beauty to anything played there. The sound produced by a soloist, chamber ensemble or indeed a full symphonic orchestra expands and blooms inside the space, a truly versatile palette giving access to a range of textures from delicate and intimate to thunderous and epic.

Terminology
Legato (Combo): The core legato technique - a combination of slurred, bowed and intense Sul I intervals with repetition based alt-attacks. (with Vibrato, 5 Dye, 4 RR, velocity controlled switching between Legato Types)
Legato (Slurred): A slurred legato, with multiple dynamics of slurred intervals and repetition based alt-attacks. (this is split off from the main Combo patch)
Sustain: A sustained note, recorded at 5 discrete dynamics. Cnn be played polyphonically
Glancing Attack: A short brushed bow, ideal for accenting notes.
Hairpin (Short): A short hairpin, utilising the alt-attacks.
Hairpin (Medium): A medium hairpin, utilising the body of the alt-attacks.
Hairpin (rebow): A long hairpin, featuring the bow-change used in capturing the sustain

Our dedicated plugin libraries work as standalone instruments in your DAW, meaning that no serial number is provided and the authorisation process happens during your download. We provide an AU, VST2, VST3 and an AAX, so as long as your chosen DAW supports one of those plugin formats, you’re good to go.
